Bomb Disposal Robot

Robot in the workshop

Myself and Louis McCallum were commissioned to build an imitation bomb disposal robot for artist Richard DeDomenici’s Olympic street performance.

We took a commercially available toy robot called Spykee (made by Meccano) and tore out its circuitry. We then built an entirely new and beefier robot chassis, complete with powerful caterpillar tracks, a megaphone speaker and a moving arm (mechanised litter picker!). We integrated the new motor systems and electronics with the original Spykee circuitry, allowing it to be controlled over a local Wi-Fi connection using the original software.
